Newsletter - June 2008

Fellow Flatrockers,

This month the weather and beach conditions have really been against us with three aborted attempts at running the June competition. On the last occasion the swell was huge and quite dangerous. Keep you fingers crossed for the upcoming July comp round.

SOCIAL CALENDAR

A small group of 10 or so hardcore party animals made it to the social evening on 20th June at the Lennox Thai Garden. I'm told everyone enjoyed themselves and the food was excellent. It's great to see members still keen to party even in the middle of winter.

The next social getogether is a BBQ on Sunday 20th July from 12pm-4pm at Marg & Pete Bryant's home. Wazza will attempt to stump us with some of his trivia questions and yes there are prizes for the smartest! The club will provide the meat for a big BBQ cook-up, please bring a plate and your own drinks. Please come along and support your club. To assist with catering please let Marg know if you will be coming on 6687-7081.

See the Club Calendar page for full details of all our planned social activities.

CLUB SHIRTS

The club is considering ordering new team shirts for members to wear at social gatherings and inter-club competition rounds. The intention is to raise our profile and perhaps even attract more new members. Ken has organised quotes for navy blue polo shirts with light blue piping and our club logo. The cost per shirt is estimated to be $30, the committee need to know if members think it's a good idea and willing to purchase a shirt each. Please provide your feedback to the secretary@ballinamalibuclub.org.

NEWSLETTER & NEW WEB SITE

The club has a new web site – www.ballinamalibuclub.org. All the club newsletters can now be accessed via the web site and either viewed online or downloaded in a format suitable for printing. Members who have provided their email addresses to the secretary will receive an email each month containing a link to the newsletter. The Committee urges all members to take advantage of the new web site and register their email address. Members without an email address will still receive a printed copy via surface mail.

Members will find many benefits with the new web site including:

  • Timely access to a revamped Newsletter (online) with more color pictures
  • Club round results and six-monthly point score progress report.
  • Events calendar with dates of social events, club competition rounds, regional competitions. Entry forms are also available online.
  • Photo gallery of surfing, club rounds, and social events,

TRAVELERS REPORT

Eric & Chris with their new friend

Eric & Chris Walker recently ventured down to our southern nieghbours for a taste of some Kiwi curlers.

They say they had some reasonable surf but the highlight of their trip was an unforfgetable natural experience with a dolphin. The locals swore them to secrecy but they did tell us this amazing dolphin was in the wild and they spent 4 hours in the water playing and bonding with the friendly creature.

I wonder if Eric's connection with the ocean through his years of surfing somehow influenced the dolphin's decision to hang around for such a long time. Anyway it appears all three enjoyed themselves.

DID YOU KNOW? .... HOW TO HANG TEN

Hanging Ten, or nose-riding, is the quintessential longboarding move. There isn’t much that can compare to gliding across the face of a wave with water spitting at your face as you are perfectly balanced on the nose of your surfboard. Unfortunately, Hanging 10 is also one of the most difficult moves in longboarding, requiring balance, coordination and, sometimes, just a little bit of faith. (This is written from a ‘regular footed,’ or right foot in the back, viewpoint. If you are ‘goofy footed,’ or stand with your left foot in the back, simply switch ‘right’ and ‘left’ in the directions.)

  1. Step1 - Wait for a good wave; ideally, one that isn’t too steep or too big and peels (breaks) nicely. The size of a wave you ride should depend on how confident you are in your surfing abilities. Start smaller and as your confidence increases, work your way into larger waves.
  2. Step2 - Stand up on your board and begin to aim the nose at about a 45-degree angle away from the way (somewhere in between parallel and perpendicular to the wave.) You should be riding close to the top—or crest—of the wave with your chest towards the face of the wave. This is called ‘frontside.’
  3. Step3 - Cross-step your way towards the nose of the board.
  4. Step4 - Pause when your front foot is about 9 inches from the edge of your board’s nose.
  5. Step5 - Reach your left foot forward until only your toes are hanging over the nose of your boards. This is sometimes called ‘Hanging Five.’ It might help to curl your toes over the nose, to give you a better grip and make you feel more secure.
  6. Step6 - Now comes the tricky part: while leaning your center of gravity away from the nose, bring your right foot to the front of your board and let it hang over next to your left. This one small movement will take a good amount of practice, and you’re going to wipe out a lot. Don’t worry though; it can be done. If you’ve ever seen surf videos or pictures where the surfer has their body leaning far back and hands over their head, after you try nose-riding once you’ll understand why. Experiment with different positions until you feel balanced and comfortable.
