Fellow Flatrockers,
Well hooray we were finally able to run
a competition round this month. Sadly yours truly missed
out as unfortunately business sometimes comes before pleasure.
But it was great to hear the weather was fine, the surf
reasonable, and there was a good roll-up of some 18 members.
See Wazza's report below for the complete wrap up.
Alan Rich took some great photos of the
day, check them out on the photos
page. Following are a couple of noteworthy pics from the
day.

Brian Delaney makes a huge comeback!
Welcome back Brian.

PRESIDENT/CAPTAIN'S REPORT
The Judging tent in full swing |
Finally some sun & surf for our competition
day even if it was our second attempt for the month. Also a great
roll up with 18 hardy souls. Great to see former President Brian
Delaney & the lovely Robyn back with us. Brian slipped straight
back into competition mode winning his first heat & progressing
to the 1st place final. Paul Bioletti also was in attendance as
was Mr. Daz Larkin so all in all a great day was had by all. Thanks
to Robyn for adding the female touch to the BBQ. The only sad
part about the day was that yours truly dropped the morning tea
in the sand. I'll put it down to job stress. This Sunday we are
having our annual trivia day with Marg & Pete kindly donating
their residence as the venue. Things kick off at 12.00 noon with
trivia first followed by lunch then more trivia, drinks etc. The
club is providing the meat for lunch. Hopefully we will get a
good rollup. We will also be making a decision on club T/shirts
on Sunday. See you there.
Wazza.
SOCIAL CALENDAR
The next social getogether is a BBQ on Sunday
20th July from 12pm-4pm at Marg & Pete Bryant's home. Wazza
will attempt to stump us with some of his trivia questions and
yes there are prizes for the smartest! The club will provide the
meat for a big BBQ cook-up, please bring a plate and your own
drinks. Please come along and support your club.
To assist with catering please let Marg know if you will be coming
on 6687-7081.
See the Club
Calendar page for full details of all our planned social activities.

CLUB SHIRTS
The club is considering ordering new team shirts
for members to wear at social gatherings and inter-club competition
rounds. The intention is to raise our profile and perhaps even
attract more new members. Ken has organised quotes for navy blue
polo shirts with light blue piping and our club logo. The cost
per shirt is estimated to be $30, the committee need to know if
members think it's a good idea and willing to purchase a shirt
each. Please provide your feedback to the secretary@ballinamalibuclub.org.
NEWSLETTER & NEW WEB SITE
The club has a new web site – www.ballinamalibuclub.org.
All the club newsletters can now be accessed via the web site
and either viewed online or downloaded in a format suitable for
printing. Members who have provided their email addresses to the
secretary will receive an email each month containing a link to
the newsletter. The Committee urges all members to take advantage
of the new web site and register their email address. Members
without an email address will still receive a printed copy via
surface mail.
Members will find many benefits with the new
web site including:
- Timely access to a revamped Newsletter (online) with more
color pictures
- Club round results and six-monthly point score progress
report.
- Events calendar with dates of social events, club competition
rounds, regional competitions. Entry forms are also available
online.
- Photo gallery of surfing, club rounds, and social events,

TRAVELERS REPORT - from Chris Bull
Chris with Port Campbell Point lefts behind. |
Helen and I recently returned from a 3 week tour
of the middle of Australia travelling from Darwin in the north,
via Alice Springs and Adelaide, to the Great Ocean Road in the
south. One of the highlights of the tip for me was seeing the
beautiful waves along a spectacular stretch of coast known as
the Great Ocean Road.
The holiday seaside town of Port Campbell is
located on the scenic Great Ocean Road, between Warrnambool to
the west and Lavers Hill and Cape Otway in the east. The coastline
around the Port Campbell area consists of steep, rocky cliffs
with pristine sandy white beaches in bays at the base of many
of these cliffs.
On the day we passed through the town the Port
Campbell Point lefts were breaking about 500 meters out to sea
at around 6'-8' caressed by an offshore breeze with no-one surfing.
A young local surfer happened by and I asked him about the water
temperature, he said it was around 11 degrees. I asked what thickness
wet-suit they normally wore, he said 4 mm in the body and 3 mm
in the arms. I couldn't imagine having to paddle so far out wearing
such a thick wet suit. Than god for the North Coast with a water
temperature of 24 degrees and wearing just a 2mm short arm spring
suit in the middle of winter! On the opposite side of Port Campbell
Point is a right-hander tow-in spot called "Two Mile"
which handles 20ft swells with ease. Maybe next trip!
Huge collection of surfboards & memorabilia |
On the way to Melbourne we drove through Torquay
for the first time since my early twenties, we stopped at Surf
City which is a mega-complex of surfing companies situated together.
There’s Rip Curl, Piping hot, and Quicksilver as well as
the Surfing World Museum which was reported in the May 2008 Club
Newsletter. You could easily spend a few hours in this museum
that has a huge collection of all types of surfboards, pictures,
videos, and is a fantastic preservation of surfing history. Well
worth a look.
GUEST RAVE....
Sunday 13th July Ballina Mal Club Meeting
Kept feeling in me bones all morning, that today
was going to be a u bewt, appendage tearing surf…actually
I feel all sorts of things in me bones these days…Max understands
[well and there aint much of anything pleasurable appening in
our bones these days]. Jeez, you would think Stylemaster and Madam
Terrific could 'ave brought Max today. All these new members….
Ise away a few months and there is a flamin’ revolution
in the membership ranks. Ya know one of these new upstarts happened
to say today, that he is a better lookin bloke, than he is a surfer!!
Anyway, youse lot it was a fanbloodytabulous
day….Wazza’s beautifully prepared and cared for sausages…but
what did he mean when he said ‘a bit of grit on the sausages
helps digestion?’ Does he thinks we’s a bunch of Rhode
Island Reds? And a few of the older brigade, nah I mean the senior
surfers,nah I didn’t mean that either….I meant to
say some erstwhile members turned up, who for awhile have not
surfed with the club…Devil Delaney, Jasmine Jan and a couple
of the other more nameless famous members…
The waves, water temperature, whales, Margi’s
pet shark [and Wazza’s sausages],the convivial atmosphere
in and out of the water, though Cool Man Col and Killer Kerry
have to be mentioned for the intimidation tactics that they used
on one of our poor defenceless members…gawd some humans
are mean and one of them is one whom I spend most of my week minding
and keeping inside so that she does not outrage the neighbours…….anyway
in just a few words…it was a really cool, unreal, sick day.
And no, I have not recovered from my combined
affliction of rabies and distemper, but I am living with it and
I am back, so there!!
See youse on the beach and in the water.
