Newsletter - Aug 2008

Fellow Flatrockers,

Our August round brought a beautiful sunny day with challenging 2 metre plus right-handers off the point and some fair 1 metre reforms in the corner.

Alan Rich took some great photos of the day, check them out on the photos page. Following are a couple of noteworthy pics from the day.

PRESIDENT/CAPTAIN'S REPORT

Kerry and Darryl in the judging tent

Can you believe it? Two comps in a row. What a beautiful winters day for our August comp. The surf was testing both for its size & lack of quality but it was nice just to be out there. A few hardy souls ventured out the back but the majority of us showed more sense, or was it lack of courage, surfing the inner corner reforms. Numbers were down again with only 10 competitors as the Lennox Longboard Classic stole a few of our members. On a more positive note I did manage not to drop the morning tea in the sand this time and would like to thank Robyn Delaney for the fruit cake.

I mentioned at the competition that our favourite son Eric Walker & the lovely Chris have a challenge ahead with Chris recently being diagnosed with cancer. A shock to us all. I know that Chris will pull through this & on behalf of all our members I would like to wish Chris a speedy recovery. To have a chat with Eric ring 0417400547 or Chris on 0418457715.

I'm off to Crescent Head & Scotts Head for a couple of weeks surfing with Marg & Pete Bryant so looking forward to some quality waves.

WAZZA.

SOCIAL CALENDAR

Our next social event was to be at the Eltham Pub on 15th August. This has been replaced by a Dinner & Show on Friday 22nd August at the Ballina RSL. The night is a double header tribute show to British music of the 60's. Cost is $40 per person. Should be a great night. Brian Delaney has kindly agreed to collect the money from members but it must be paid this week to ensure we get seats. Contact Brian on 66285317.

Tickets have now been purchased for those who paid for the Dinner & Show. There are still 5 seats available as of 4th Aug at one of the tables. Anyone interested in coming who has not booked yet can go to the club and ask for the Ballina Malibu Club tables and can still book at table 32. It is $39.90 per person for the 2 course dinner and show. It could be a great night for those who like British rock and pop of the 60's.

See the Club Calendar page for full details of all our planned social activities.

GUEST RAVE....

Great day to be on the beach….being out in the surf was a little more challenging!!! I missed the first round…well, that’s not anything different to most comp days…but I did miss something special; the waves ridden by renowned big wave rider Rob! Rob and Chris Bull tried the same tactics in the second round, hanging out the back, way out the back [almost on the horizon], hoping that big sets would come their way….but their crafty plan did not pay off…the big waves just did not roll in the right way and that master of surf etiquette Mista Wazza worked the inside sections of small stuff [could not use the Wazza description] to wipe out the opposition….even though Rob did try to claim a ride on a big wave after the time had elapsed.

Bill made sure that Jan had an edge in her final round….called the ‘Jan Plan’ …it can be adapted to suit any competitor as long as he or she has a caring accomplice [that’s sort of what Bill calls himself….he was hoping that Jan would go to work this afternoon, so that he could watch the lawn bowls on the tele]. Its a very clever ruse [strategy] ….the competitor makes certain to enter the water a couple of minutes before the other colleagues …and when he or she is in the line up position and the other poor unsuspecting suckers are still on the beach, the adviser/coach/manager switches the timer on and turns the flag to green…and before you know it or before you can say grey ghost or where did you get it, he or she has more than likely chalked up a couple of very good scoring waves.

As mentioned earlier, as well as the big wave riding demonstration given by Rob, some of the other magic moments of the day’s surfing and stuff, were Bill’s floater on a magnificent half of metre of foam, Chris Bull’s death wish drop, Alan’s marathon training session ….coming ashore at Sharpes and asking the judges if they saw his wave, Brian [‘I’ve only just worn in this McTavish’] and Ken’s battle to see who would not catch a wave, Devil having a little talk on the beach and thereby almost missing his heat…..there was just so much happening that no one commented on the passing parade…

Alan called a dune watch meeting….well, if you saw the dune today, you were lucky, because it might not be there next meeting….the erosion of the last week or so is a stark warning about the fragility of our coastline.

Hopefully, we wont be judging from the car park at the next comp and everyone will have recovered from the concert at the RSL Club in Ballina.
