The PRESIDENT's REPORT from Wazza

What a great way to start Fathers Day. Sunshine, good surf, great food, beer & more importantly great company. Thanks to Marg & all the lovely ladies for breakfast & the lovely lemon cake.

We had our largest turnout for the year with 28 competitors. Even the old President ventured out into the ocean. Great to see Kirk Hickey back on deck & surfing well enough to take out the day from Steve Watts.

Unfortunately Marg & I will be away for the 6 ways & also our next social at the Cherry St. Bowlo. We will be doing it tough at Crescent Head for a couple of weeks. The things you have to do. Go get them at Byron & have a great night at the Bowlo.

See ya out there - Wazza.

The SOCIAL REPORT from Brian Delaney

We had a good roll up for LaTriviata in August at Marg and Peter Bryant's cabana. We had great food contributions (ask Eric what he thought) and fun with Wazza's questions. I had to leave before the winners of bottles of wine were announced but I have since found out Alan and Evelyn Rich were 1st and 2nd (don't who was which) and your executive senior social director was 3rd. The club provided the meat for the bbq and it was shared byo for everything else including some of Marg's freshly baked desserts. Start saving the beer bottle top questions for next year Waz.

SATURDAY, 19TH SEPT, 6:30PM at THE BALLINA BOWLING CLUB
This month we have a really good night lined up. We are going to be part of our main sponsor, The Ballina Bowling Club's 100th birthday party. It is going to be an all you can eat Seafood Smorgasbord Night for $19.90 per person (phone the club for the children's prices, I could not figure it out). The free entertainment will be Fossil Rock who are well known in the area for 60s and 70s music. But wait there is more. Every person gets a free drink that night for the birthday celebration and every person who comes dressed in 60s style clothes gets 2 free drinks (true). So that means most of us retrotards can go as we are and get another drink. I got some names last Sunday of who wants to go and tomorrow I am going to reserve enough tables for another 10 more than I presently have on my list. So email me at delaney@aapt.net.au or phone me at 6628 5317 to be there and rockin' out. If you come make sure you swipe your new club membership card through the machine at the door to be eligible for prizes (or points for prizes, waz knows about it). Some of us wearing our club shirts on the night would be good because Waz said directors of the Bowling club will be there that night and would probably appreciate our support.

see ya, Brian D.

COMPETITON UPDATE

The September round was the best attended so far this year with 28 members competing in clean 1 to 1.5 metre glassy waves. It was a tough desicion whether to surf the smaller, longer waves on the point or the bigger but shorter, left peaks on the front bank. Kirk Hickey turned up this month and surfed his way into first place. Congratulations Kirk!

Judging Criteria for Competition Rounds

The following is an exerpt from the judging handbook of Surfing Australian:

“The surfer must perform committed (outside) radical maneuvers in the most critical sections of a wave with style (control), power, and speed to maximize scoring potential. Innovative and progressive surfing will be taken into account when rewarding points for committed surfing. The surfer who executes these criteria with the highest degree of difficulty and control on the better waves shall be rewarded with the highest scores.”

With particular reference to longboard judging, points will be awarded for classic surfing maneuvers. In longboarding, such maneuvers include:

  • Nose riding, trimming, and stalling
  • Walking on the board
  • Standing and crouching “Island pullouts”
  • Bottom turns - full rail or from the tail
  • Cut backs - Drop knee or wide stance/sit down style
  • Tube rides and cover-ups
  • Top turns and fade take offs
  • Late take offs
  • Critical surfing

It is not necessary for a surfer to “work the wave over” in this division. Simple trimming or climbing and dropping, if performed with control in the critical part of a wave, may receive a high score.

SUMMARY OF POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN JUDGING LONGBOARD HEATS:

  1. How well were the maneuvers connected together?
  2. Did the surfer walk foot over foot or did they shuffle?
  3. Are the surfer’s toes really hanging over or are they back from the nose?
  4. Has the surfer used the whole length of their surfboard?
  5. Compare outside maneuvers to inside maneuvers. Are they major or minor maneuvers?
  6. Compare take off area and how deep the surfer was at the initial point of take off
  7. Consider how the surfer utilized the wave
  8. Consider the ability of the surfer to make sections and whether the maneuvers were functional in doing so
  9. Did the surfer actually complete the maneuver and with control?
  10. What did the surfer complete before falling?
  11. Do not be fooled by tricks or arched backs. Judge the real maneuvers
  12. Most importantly, the rules state that longboarders will be judged on a 50-50-percentage combination of traditional and modern maneuvers with control being the major factor.

We invite suggestions from members regarding practical methods of improving our ability to apply the judging criteria. Some suggestions to date include:

  • online video examples of waves and their scores,
  • judging clinics

If you have an other ideas we'd like to hear them.
