The PRESIDENT's REPORT from Wazza

From all reports a good time was had by all at our May competition. Sorry I had to leave early but My lovely wife Leonie was celebrating her 60th birthday & needed some shopping therapy on the Gold Coast.

A big welcome to new members Pete Courtney & Paul Abbott. I believe Paul took out the day so well done. The surfing talent in our club goes from strength to strength. Maybe we should throw out some challenges.

I mentioned in our last news letter that I was in the process of seeking financial sponsorship for our club. I am glad to report that Ballina Bowling Club in Cherry St. has agreed to sponsor us. There will be some conditions & I will have more on these & the amount at our next competition in June.

As mentioned previously Bruce Wilson was able to gain sponsorship with his employer to fund two new sets of competition rashies. These are being ordered by Eric. Thanks again Bruce.

Mi Thai restaurant in Lennox Head has also agreed to provide a $25 voucher each month for our competition to be given away to a lucky competitor. Paul Bioletti was the lucky winner in May . Enjoy Paul . Please support the restaurant. The food is great & host Daniel & Andrew will make you welcome.

Best of luck to all members competing in the Byron Malibu Classic.

Those beautiful Autumn days are with us & some great surf has been rolling through on the reefs at Lennox so get out there.

See you in the surf.

Wazza

The SOCIAL REPORT from Brian Delaney

Our club social night in April was spent at Cherry St Bowling Club sampling one of Australia's long term genteel sports (or is it recreation), lawn bowls. We have all been past greens with games in progress, the players in their creams and all the action very calm and civilised. It was part of my childhood because I lived quite close to a bowling club and saw neighbours going off to bowls but I had never given it a try. So for most of our group of 14 it was our first time on the greens for a bit of roll and a laugh. Wazza and Steve Watts gave demos of how to roll the bowls, the objectives, and the rules, and we were into it. It was a balmy still night with a brewing thunderstorm off to the south so we knew our time could be cut short. I think all lanes got through their games before the rain started and it was a lot of fun. The BBQ was fired after the game so everyone was pretty hungry by then and it was worth waiting for. There were fresh bread rolls, salads and dessert of sponge cake with fruit salad and whipped cream plus some nice wine. It could be a go again next year. For more pics from the night see the photos page.

Bill Webster showing style with the bowls.

Yours truly after 5 scooners of Tooheys New wondering why my bowl is going left instead of right. Oops, forgot to check the bias again, damm!

This month we have bowling of the more noisy variety, Ten Pin bash 'em down bowls will be our next club get together on Friday, 15 May at 7.30pm, $6.50 per person. We need to know numbers to book lanes so please contact me directly on 6628-5317 or delaney@aapt.net.au if you would like to come along.

See the club social calendar for more detail. If you have not yet downloaded or even seen the calendar you can find it by going to the club's website home page and click on the hyperlink on the left side panel.

Bye for now, Brian D.

Wrecks & Relics Away Trip?

Wazza had suggested the Club organise an away competition to the Noosa Heads Malibu Club's annual Wrecks & Relics long board competition for the over 50's. At the time of writing Chris, Wazza, Brian Delaney, Phil Calnan, Mick Calnan, Eric Walker, Mick Wilson, Bruce Wilson, and Alan Rich have entered the competition. So it's shaping up to be a fun get away for members. If you are considering joining us for the weekend please be aware the Wrecks & Relics is only small comp with limited entries so we recommend you get your entry in ASAP. For more details go to www.noosawrecksandrelics.com

COMPETITON UPDATE

The fourth comp round for the year turned out to be the best so far with clean 1 to 1.5 metre rights off the point and lefts and rights off the peak. Light rain early in the morning gave way to a beautiful warm sunny day with light off-shore breezes.

Judges - Pete Wilcox, Paul Bioletti, & Brian Fryer, with Captain Eric Walker spotting.

A great day of surfing - Frank Mcwilliams scoring a clean one.

BBQ ROSTER

A slight change in the plan to implement a catering roster. Wazza has agreed to continue to purchase the food for each comp. All we need then is two members to be on BBQ duty on each comp day. The two man team wil help out by ensuring hot water for coffee is ready and then cook the meat and clean the BBQ afterwards. Wazza will maintain a list and select two members at each comp to look after the BBQ at the next comp. If a member is unable to attend Wazza will ask for a volunteer replacement on the day.

Thanks go to Roger Coulthurst for helping out last comp. Next comp's helpers are Phil Calnan and Col Woodbry.

JUNE BBQ TEAM: Col Woodbry & Phil Calnan
