Newsletter - MAR 2010

Fellow Flatrockers,

Secretary - Alan

Marching around at the comp, thinking, wow, what crap surf! The big tree parked on the beach at Flattie has been shifted northwards a bit after some bigger recent swells. Bruce gets more time in the water in one day than most of us do in a week. Now we know his ‘secret’: go out in everything. He seemed to be pleased to apply that philosophy to all the rest of us as well: “Go surf or go home!”, or something like that!

The year has gotten off well. We’ve done the new executive crew’s fancy portrait. It only took a month to get everyone in one place with shirts on and smiling. Most of us anyway, it’s hard. Lots of discussion at the recent committee meeting about the Anniversary dinner. The Bowlos is shaping up to be the best venue choice, especially considering all they do for us.

Thanks to everyone who returned the social nights survey, which was about half of you. I’m not sure what that says about the interests of the other half that didn’t reply but everyone’s welcome, of course, so it matters not. Of those that replied it was fairly evenly split between monthly or bi-monthly functions. We’ve decided to put out the social calendar with room for ‘impromptu’ social nights to be formed for those who want more nights out. These decisions will be on the month’s comp day. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, a day, and a dinner.

The Friday night social at the Westower was just as good as the last time we were there. That one was great, if you remember. Really nice ambience, Raphis palm trees along the wall, cane bordered dinner tables, good food and good music. A lot of people in the Tavern this time around and we had an excellent roll-up of members and friends. Filled about 4 tables. Rae Cook was in from Bali for a visit and looking well, as were Mick and Marianne Wilson. Very good food too. Seems like BMC’ers are happy to order both oysters and pizza as popular platters on the night.

We still were almost the only ones left hanging around at the end of the night as the muso gave us pretty much a private concert with a brilliant mixture of contemporary and original acoustic numbers. He had a really great song list and we probably made his night too as it ended up being pretty much a one-on-one experience with a very appreciative audience of Ballina Malibuists. Due to unforeseen difficulties with my memory I had to borrow a few cameras during the night as I didn’t have mine with me. We will put up a page of party pic’s in the coming days. Watch for the smiling faces.

I was speaking with my mate Dickie Hoole as I write this. He said the weather charts are brilliant for good waves at the Noosa longboard festival ALL week. We’ll know soon enough. Eric is keen to get up there and challenge for a spot in the finals. Knowing Eric, he’s going to get some good waves for his entry dollars up there. Good luck, son. I think he’s finally starting to surf in his division too! That’ll make some kids happy. Since this report will be up and stuck online for ages, we’re all hoping that it’s a podium finish that we’re looking back at on this website in a few weeks when it’s all over.

In other news, Ballina Malibu Club has elected its new 2010 office bearers. At the recent Committee meeting held at the Ballina Bowling are seated, from left, Eric Walker (Vice-captain), Alan Rich (Secretary), Warren Wyatt (President), Marg Bryant (Treasurer). Standing: Bruce Wilson (Captain), Col Woodbry (Vice President), Mick Wilson (Executive Committee), Mel Mott (Social Committee), Kerry Wilcox (Social Committee), Jan Webster (Social Committee), Steve Watts (Catering). OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS

Speaking of good surf, I hope those charts can do something for Flat Rock and surrounds in the coming days. It would be good to share the wealth. Here’s hoping, anyway.

There’s really quite a bit going on in 2010; it’s a good year to be in the club. It was last night, that’s for sure. See you soon.

Alan.

The PRESIDENT's REPORT from Wazza

Finally we're on the way for 2010. Great roll up for our first competition - 23 surfers and one pussy - The President.

Despite the poor conditions there was some good surfing on show with Frank McWilliams continuing on from last year and taking out the day. A big welcome to Dave Zeman and Doug Blackburn, great to see Terry Hargraves back also. Welcome to the club guys. I'm sure you will enjoy yourself. Dave got off to a flying start winning his division and also the much sought after Mi Thai Dinner Voucher.

Your new committee is hard at work and its great to see the enthusiasm. Our new social committee - Jan, Mel and Kerry have already got our social calendar sorted out and will now devote their attention to organising the clubs 20th Anniversary celebrations. It will be bigger than Ben Hur.

Keep your eye on our website and also your emails. There are lots of things in the pipeline. While writing this a big southerly has arrived and hopefully with it some waves. Thanks to Steve Watts for the lovely brekky and thanks to Ken Carrington for the donation of key rings to sell. They look great and only $5.

Hope the waves roll your way. Wazzza

The SOCIAL REPORT

This year the ladies volunteered to establish a committee to organise the social side of the club. The committee includes Mel Mott, Jan Webster & Kerry Wilcox. The ladies thought a 20th anniversary celebration would be high on their list of social events. We can't wait to see what they come up with. Keep you eyes on this space. (Ed)

COMPETITON UPDATE

The Ballina Malibu Club held finally got their 2010 comp rounds off on Sunday 7 March. Flat Rock’s surf was a messy one-out-of-ten quality but the new Club Captain, Bruce (‘I’ll go out in anything and stay all day’) Wilson, sent the troops into the stormy seas. Luck was a handy tactic to have onside under the prevailing conditions. Newly crowned 2009 Club Champion, Frank McWilliams, took the Firsts’ top placing over perennial comp director Eric Walker. Eric may have just been warming up though for an assault on this months’ Noosa Longboard Comp. It’s got the makings of an interesting year at the top. There was a great roll-up considering the lacklustre conditions and new members are always welcome on the first Sunday of the month. Check out Alan's pics...

March Competition results:

1sts: 1 Frank McWilliams, 2 Eric Walker, 3 Steve Watts, 4 Grant Edwards, 5 Brian Fryer.

2nds: 1 Paul Bioletti, 2 Marg Bryant, 3 Mick Wilson, 4 Bruce Wilson, 5 Doug Blackburn.

3rds: 1 Mel Mott, 2 Alan Rich, 3 Pete Wilcox, 4 Adi Lengyl, 5 Rob House.

4ths: 1 Dave Zeman, 2 Terry Hargraves, 3 Ken Garrington, 4 Bill Webster, 5 Chris Bull.

5ths: 1 Kerry Wilcox, 2 Col Harper, 3 Jan Webster.

Judging Criteria for Competition Rounds

The judging criteria is now available online. A decision was made at the AGM last week to have the option available to limit the number of waves a surfer can catch per heat to 5 or 10 waves. This rule may be implemented on an as needed basis at the discretion of the Club Captain depending upon the conditions at each comp round.

Next Club Round

Our next club round for 2010 is on Sunday 4th April.

Mi Thai Winner

New member Dave Zeman won the Mi Thai $25 voucher this month.
