Newsletter - JUNE 2009

Fellow Flatrockers,

The June competition welcomed surfers with a beautiful winters morning, off-shore breezes, and clean half to one metre lefts and rights on the peak down the beach. See the competition update below for full details and results.

A bright sunny morning with fun clean waves was interrupted temporarily as a dark thundering storm front moved off the coast mid-morning.

Don't forget for the benefit of members there is now a free classifieds section at the end of the newsletter, so if you have any surfing gear to sell simply email your free listing to the secretary.

We welcome input from members for the club's Newsletter so if you have any suggestions or appropriate content please email the secretary.

I hope to see you all at our July competition round.

Club Secretary,
Chris Bull

The PRESIDENT's REPORT from Wazza

My apologies for leaving early last Sunday but I was halfway through a bowls tournament. I will be in full attendance next comp. While I was on the beach the day looked perfect with light offshore winds, gentle rolling waves & another good rollup. Welcome to new member Adi Lengyel, I am sure you will enjoy the club.

As mentioned on the beach our new rash shirts have arrived & after being screen printed with the logo of our sponsor Alpine Nurseries they will be put into use. The big news though is our ongoing sponsorship with Cherry St. Bowling Club. The club has agreed to sponsor us to the tune of $1500 per year. It has always been a struggle financially for our club so this sponsorship will be a tremendous boost. In appreciation our members have been asked to join the club & if you missed out filling in an application form on the beach last Sunday I will have them there again next month. The committee has agreed to pay the first year membership for all our members. I'd also like to thank Ken Garrington of Eastmon Digital in Lismore for his generous donation of two pairs of binoculars to be used by the spotters during our competitions.

Don’t forget our next social night at the Lennox Head Bowling Club on Friday 26th June from 6.30. A group of our members are off to Noosa for the Wrecks & Relics comp. on 20th &21st June. There will be a report on this in the next newsletter.

There’s plenty of waves around so get out there.

Wazza.

The SOCIAL REPORT from Brian Delaney

The May social night was ten pin bowling in Ballina. There were five of us so we were able to use just the one lane for more intense competition. It had been years or decades since any of us had put foot inside a bowling alley and there have been changes since then. You do not need a pencil and score sheet to keep score now and arguments over scoring have been eliminated because sensor technology has taken over. The screen at your alley keeps score of how many pins were knocked down and the scores of each player. There is now audio/visual entertainment that is like a scaled down version of the Eurovision music contest. There are pulsating, swirling multicoloured lights syncronized to the big screens showing the videos of the current favourite songs. We were multitasking the bowling to the stimulation of the senses and also not hearing each other. We got that old feeling of being 15 or 16 again having a night out away from the oldies. We refrained from squealing like those in other lanes but we did cheer when we got a good knockdown. It was good fun, I can't remember who won but it wasn't me.

The next social night is a bistro night at Lennox Head Bowling Club at 6:30 on Friday, 26th June. Note, this is later in the month because of a fairly big contingent going to the Wrecks and Relics comp at Noosa on the weekend before. We do need to book seating so please let me know if you'd like to come along. Email - delaney@aapt.net.au or phone - 6628-5317.

Please note we have two venue changes to the social calendar. The Tintenbar Sports Day and the Teven Golf Day have been replaced with dinner at the Cherry St Bowling Club and Wicked Restaurant. See the social calendar for more details.

bye for now,
Brian D.

Wrecks & Relics Away Trip?

Wazza suggested we organise a social away event at the Noosa Heads Malibu Club's annual Wrecks & Relics long board competition for the over 50's. At the time of writing we have 12 members competing so it's shaping up to be a fun get away and we might even win a few prizes. We'll report on the results in the next newsletter. For more details go to www.noosawrecksandrelics.com

COMPETITON UPDATE

The fifth comp round for the year was another fun day with clean half to one metre left and right peaks breaking down the beach. A bright sunny day with off-shore breeze early was only temporarily interupted mid-morning as a thunder and lightning laiden storm-front moved off the coast. Twenty-five surfers turned up for this month's compeitition round. It was great to see another new member turn up, welcome to Adi Lenygel. Congratulations to Gary Burden on a great win.
