Newsletter - APR 2010

Fellow Flatrockers,

Secretary - Alan

Our beloved Secretary is away this month attending a family wedding in Sydney. Alan was hoping to get some fun waves at Cresent Head on the trip down so perhaps we'll see some photos in the next newsletter. (Hope all goes well Alan! - Ed).

This month's comp finally got off the ground after the first attempt was cancelled due to wild surf the week before. See Wazza's report following for more details.

The PRESIDENT's REPORT from Wazza

A great day was had by all at our April Comp. Eighteen members took to the small surf with enthusiasm. Congratulations to Eric who took out the day. No surprise in that though.

New recruit Doug Blackburn came through to take out his heat in the first round, well done Doug. Jan Webster was on fire and in a hot heat came out 1st in the 4ths. Steve Watts effort to race back from the regionals at Lennox to surf the second round paid off with a well deserved 1st in the 2nds. The sun was shining, the snags were good and the beer cold - all in all a good day.

Stay safe, Wazza

The SOCIAL REPORT

Next Saturday night 17th April a few of our members are gathering at the Lennox Head Bowling Club at 7pm for drinks and dinner. If you have got nothing on come along. It's not a designated club function just a night out.

Judging Criteria for Competition Rounds

The judging criteria is now available online. A decision was made at the AGM last week to have the option available to limit the number of waves a surfer can catch per heat to 5 or 10 waves. This rule may be implemented on an as needed basis at the discretion of the Club Captain depending upon the conditions at each comp round.

Some 15 members recently attended a juding clinic held by our club at the Cherry St Bowling Club. Thanks go to Eric Walker for helping explain the judging process and Col Woodbry for putting together the surfing DVD and providing the projector used to demonstrate the fine art of determining the true value of the ridden wave.

TRAVEL REPORT

MEMBER PROFILE

1. Name: Mick Wilson

2. Age? Born in 1954 makes me 55 turning 56 this year.

3. Family? My lovely wife Mary-Anne, eldest daughter Carly married to Murray and youngest daughter Erin, plus Indie the cat.

4. Where do you live now? In the lovely soon to be bypassed Alstonville – 28 Ocean View to be precise.

5. Why did you end up where you are now, how and when? Previously being in the banking game I moved with family from Kiama to Mackay to Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie to Lismore in 1994, I then told the bank I did not like them anymore and left them, they booted us out of their house so we had to find one of our own and I think we did pretty well.

6. What is your current job: I manage the Ballina office of Westlawn Finance Limited.

7. What is the best job you ever had? When I was a youngster I worked at the Post Office in Kiama in school holidays delivering telegrams & mail, that was good fun, but I would have to say that my current job would take a lot to beat.

8. How old were you when you started surfing? Gee I was in the water before I could walk with a rubber ring around my waist. I suppose I started body surfing when about 9, I remember getting a pair of yellow flippers for Xmas and I was straight out the back cracking the big waves, lefts, rights & straight downers. In 1968 I purchased my first surfboard, 8’6”Gordon Smith D fin for $20 off a guy at North ‘Gong beach.

9. Where was that and why? Kiama was my local, it was basically across the road from home, but we generally surfed any where between Shellharbour and Gerroa – depending on transport.

10. Did your parents surf? No

11. Which is your best foot forward? The left one of course

12. What is your favourite type of wave? Ocean waves by a long shot, much better then the good-bye wave, and preferably 3’ to 5’ with a face to work and a tube here and there would be nice.

13. Where are your favourite surf spot(s)? Anywhere you get the above waves, such as Werri Point, Crescent Head, North Bombo, Flat Rock & Teatrees

14. Where do you surf locally? Flat Rock, Sharpes & Lennox Beach

15. How many surfers does it take to make a crowd at flat rock? That depends on how it’s breaking, could be 6 could be 26

16. Have you surfed many different places? For instance…? A few

17. Where and when was the best surf you ever had? It would have to be at Flat Rock about 6 years ago when there was a period over a few months when we got consistent swell and 5’+ waves with great shape were regular and we were taking off at the point and riding them to SpotX. The only problem was the paddle back out.

18. What was your best surf holiday? I have only had 2, 1 being a sailing trip to Panaitan Island in the Sunda Straight and the other to New Zealand. Didn’t get much in the way of surf on either trip except when we got back from the Panaitan trip & the day after arriving back in Sydney got some great 3’ to 4’ right handers off Werri Point, just goes to show you doesn’t it.

19. Describe one of the most memorable waves you’ve ever ridden: The first & only time I’ve achieved the elusive ten toes over at Teatrees and just went on and on.

20. Who is the best surfer you’ve ever been out in the water with? I suppose it is a toss up between Ray Gleave in the old five ways & Beau Young once at Wategos.

21. Who is the best surfer you’ve ever ridden the same wave with? I have no bloody idea who he was, I just dropped in on him!

22. What is your nickname and how did you get it? Well this is getting a bit personal – brickie, not telling you anymore about that one – MFW, work it out for yourself.

23. Why did you decide to join the club? Because I was lonely and wanted someone to surf with.

24. Name your favourite surfing movies and why: Morning of the Earth, Luminary & All Summer Long cause they are the only ones I own.

25. What kind(s) of other movies do you like? Suspense and ones that tell a good story.

26. What kind(s) of music do you like? I never listened to music when I was young, apart from the oldman’s Winifred Atwell LP’s, and Mary-Anne reckons that is what is wrong with me. But I have come to appreciate many including, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Warren Zevon, Rodriguez, Joe Cocker, The Beatles, The Doors and many many more.

27. What is/are your favourite tv show(s)? ABC News, The 7.30 Report, Stateline, oops sorry, how about A Touch of Frost, Criminal Mind and any Food/Travel show.

28. Besides surfing, what is/are your favourite sports? Rugby, it’s in my blood.

29. What else interests you and why (besides surfing)? Food, wine & travel because you can enjoy them all with good friends and have a good time.

30. What is your pet peeve? B-Doubles that go through red lights in Ballina and come down in the left hand lane when all the traffic is backed up and cuts everyone off at the roundabout – selfish aggressive morons

31. What do you love most? My family

32. What is/are your favourite food(s)? A lovely slow roasted lamb shoulder with the right shiraz

33. When you drink, what do you have? If I have to pick one it would be a Rockford “Basket Press” Shiraz any vintage, they’re all good.

34. When you pay? Coopers Pale Ale

35. When I pay? Billecart Salmon

36. What are the details of the surfboards you like to ride the most? I think the Billy Tolhurst shaped 9’1” I ride now is an excellent board, it has good speed, turns well, doesn’t mind coming off the lip, but doesn’t handle the nose riding too well – or is that the operator!!

37. What kind of board you are thinking about getting next? Well I recently splurged on a new 9’6” Traditional Munro, thought the extra length would help me achieve Nivarna – ten toes over – still working on that. It is very different to the 9’1”.

38. Who are your favourite surfers and why (three or more)? Boyhood heroes were Simon Anderson & Peter Druyn, now my favourite surfers are everyone in the Mal Club.

39. Who are your nominees for the top 10 surfers (more or less) during your lifetime and why? I like anyone who is laid back and cruisie and not an egomaniac

40. What have been your best competition results? Getting through to the semis last year at the Wrecks & Relics.

41. What do you like most about competing? I like the friendship & camaraderie

42. Are you a soul surfer at heart? I surf for the relaxation, the sense of wellbeing, friendship & good times, so if that is soul surfing the answer is yes.

43. What would be your dream surf trip? I have often thought I would like to take a group of friends on an all expenses paid trip to the Maldives for 2 weeks on a big luxurious boat.

44. How much time do you spend in the water? Just like everyone else - Not enough

45. Is that enough? Tooo much!

THANKS MICK!

Mick trimming at the Wrecks & Relics last year.
